- Time: 7 p.m.
- Location: Jay's Lounge, Ringhaver Student Center, 50 Sevilla St.

Please join us for a 55-minute screening of “JOURNEY TO FREEDOM,” a remarkable new documentary
feature directed by Academy Award Winner Deborah Shaffer and scheduled for release in 2010. After the screening, Artemis Joukowsky,Executive Producer, will speak and answer questions.
JOURNEY TO FREEDOM tells the story of Waitstill Sharp, a Unitarian minister, and his wife Martha, who just days before the invasion of Czechoslovakia, left their young children and home
in Wellesley, MA to begin what would become a perilous, heroic journey. At a time when most Americans were turning a blind eye to the gathering clouds in Europe, this pair rushed headlong into the storm, where they faced arrest, torture, and perhaps worse from the Gestapo had they been captured helping Jews and anti-Nazi dissidents escape Czechoslovakia, and later, France. Who were these “American Schindlers”? What lay behind their willingness to put the well being of their fellow human beings ahead of their own comfort and family? What is their legacy for us today?
When the Sharps were recognized as Righteous Among the Nations at Yad Vashem—the highest recognition accorded by the State of Israel to non-Jews who risked their lives to save Jews during the Second World War—they became only the second and third Americans to be so honored among more than 21,000 others.
Theirs is a unique story that reveals a Little-known chapter of Holocaust history and shines new light on America’s Relationship to it.

Mythic songwriter Cosy Sheridan and her wryly insightful songs have been showcased everywhere from Carnegie Hall to the Dr. Demento Show. In her new CD “Eros” on Wind River Records listeners can see why Acoustic Guitar Magazine wrote, “If I were going to throw an all-girl dinner party at which I wanted to laugh and cry from the hors d’ouevres to the chocolate pudding, Cosy Sheridan is the first woman I’d invite.”
Sheridan is one of the pre-eminent songwriters on the folk scene documenting the lives of modern women. She places the fast-paced culture of the 21st century into a mythic context with insightful, energetic and at times comic effect. Who else would think to make botox injections the modern equivalent of the beauty cream of Persephone, Queen of the Underworld? Or to find a modern Psyche reminiscing about Eros from a women’s prison?
Sheridan first appeared on the national folk scene in 1992 when she won the songwriter’s contests at the Kerrville Folk Festival and the Telluride Bluegrass Festival and released her critically acclaimed CD “Quietly Led” on Waterbug Records. Folk Music Quarterly wrote, “When she’s accepting her Grammy, we can say we knew her when.”
Cosy has also earned a national reputation as a songwriting teacher. She has been on the faculty at The Swannanoa Gathering in North Carolina, Summersongs in New York, The California Coast Music Camp and The Black Hills Songwriting Retreat in South Dakota.
