Foreign Language Placement Test

Foreign language placement is an important aspect of language studies at Flagler College as it encompasses a series of skills that pertain to language proficiency. Foreign language faculty of Flagler College recognize such a challenge and as a result they encourage all students who wish to study a foreign language and have prior experience on it to take the placement test first.

The placement test is offered in all currently taught foreign languages, i.e. French, German, Italian and Spanish. It is a computerized, multiple-choice test that covers grammar, reading and vocabulary. It is adaptive in nature which means that the difficulty of the questions asked depends on how students respond. The test costs $10, payable upon registration. Students can make payments using credit card or electronic check. Credit cards will be charged and additional 2.75% (.28 on $10), the electronic checks are at no additional charge. Students should use this website: Payment - Language Placement Test

Following the placement test and given that students have placed on higher level French or Spanish classes, they can earn up to 8 credit hours if they pass with a B or better a higher level course. For example, if students place in FRE or SPA 201, they can earn 8 credit hours for FRE or SPA 101 and 102 if they complete FRE or SPA 201 with B or better.

However, and because the only Italian and German courses currently offered are 101 and 102 students who place in ITA or GER 102 will certainly earn 4 credit hours for 101 if they complete 102 with a B or better, as described above. Students need to keep in mind that if they score higher than 102 in Italian or German they are not guaranteed that they can continue taking higher level Italian or German courses.

Depending on the results of the placement test students will be placed on the following courses:

0-260 = 101
260-350= 102
350-430 = 201
430 + = 202 and above

Fall 2018 Placement Schedule:
  • Thursday, August 30th: 2 p.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Friday, August 31st: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
  • Monday, September 3rd: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
  • Tuesday, September 4th; 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Results are communicated directly to students upon completion of the test, and a placement form will be given to the student. Students may take that form straight to the Office of the Registrar to register for a language course, or they may hold onto the form until they are ready to register in a different semester.

Students can take the placement test at Keenan 322 (Language Lab). To do so, they need to contact Dr. Eugenia Charoni at echaroni@flagler.edu.  Students need to have with them their student ID.  If the listed dates do not work for an individual student, he/she should contact Dr. Charoni to make arrangements for a commonly convenient time.
