The
sociology
major provides
students
with training
in contemporary
human inquiry.
This program
attracts
students
interested
in social
issues such
as crime,
poverty,
aging and
urban development.
The program
is designed
to prepare
students
for work
in human
services,
social research,
and civic
leadership.
Emphasis
is placed
on developing
theoretical
understanding
and practical
research
skills.
This
major requires
students
to complete
36 credit
hours in
such courses
as Social
Problems,
Introductory
Sociology,
Research
Methods,
Development
of Sociological
Theory, and
Statistics
for Business
and Social
Science.
Outside the
15 hours
of core requirements
(SOC 101,
201, 412
and 431,
and MAT 223),
the remaining
21 credits
are sociology
electives.
Major requires
students
to complete
an exit exam.
Students
can take
whatever
sociology
courses they
like in criminology,
gerontology
or human
services.
This allows
students
to customize
their major
and experiences
to meet their
particular
needs.
The
minor requires
18 hours
including
SOC 101 and
201.
Internships
allow students
to serve
a semester
in the community,
gaining practical
experience
with social
service agencies
or state
or municipal
offices.
