MAJORS/MINORS: Sociology

The sociology major provides students with training in contemporary human inquiry. This program attracts students interested in social issues such as crime, poverty, aging and urban development. The program is designed to prepare students for work in human services, social research, and civic leadership. Emphasis is placed on developing theoretical understanding and practical research skills.

This major requires students to complete 36 credit hours in such courses as Social Problems, Introductory Sociology, Research Methods, Development of Sociological Theory, and Statistics for Business and Social Science. Outside the 15 hours of core requirements (SOC 101, 201, 412 and 431, and MAT 223), the remaining 21 credits are sociology electives. Major requires students to complete an exit exam. Students can take whatever sociology courses they like in criminology, gerontology or human services. This allows students to customize their major and experiences to meet their particular needs.

The minor requires 18 hours including SOC 101 and 201.

Internships allow students to serve a semester in the community, gaining practical experience with social service agencies or state or municipal offices.
