Course Description:
This course will allow
the student to research
a particular area of
law. The student will
consult with Judge
Poland on a weekly
basis, or as needed,
to discuss progress.
Course Objectives:
The objective of this
course is to provide
the student with an
opportunity to improve
research and writing
skills.
Course Requirements:
The student is expected
to research and write
a 20 page paper. The
student must also brief
two court cases which
pertain to his or her
area of independent
study. Any paper less
than 20 pages will
not receive an A. College
level writing is required.
Use 12-point font,
double-space, and have
one-inch margins.
Grading:
A=90-100 B=80-89 C=70-79
D=60-69 F=below 60
Course Outline:
To be determined based
upon preliminary research.
An outline of your
topic must be submitted
before the third week
of classes.
Methods of Instruction:
The professor will
consult with the student
as needed. Independent
study students will
meet with Judge Poland
as a group twice each
month, or as is necessary.
Discussion of ideas
is necessary in order
to optimize the independent
study experience.
Outcomes:
The student will learn
to do research, to
write, and to brief
cases in a lawyerly
manner.
Attendance:
Attendance at a scheduled
meeting is required.
Cheating:
Cheating of any sort
will result in an F for
the course.
