When
the
Flagler
College
Chancellor,
Dr.
William
Proctor,
asked
Judge
Richard
Poland,
Pre-Law
Program
Director,
to
build
the
Pre-Law
Program
for
the
college,
Poland
drew
upon
his
own
undergraduate
experience
to
focus
on
10
components.
"My approach was a simple one," Poland explained. "As
a law school graduate and as a practitioner and judge for
nearly 20 years, I asked myself what type of undergraduate
experience would have been beneficial to me."
In conjunction
with classroom work, Poland recommends integrating internships,
guest speakers, courtroom observations and well-founded
advice from professionals.
The 10 components
which constitute the Pre-Law program include:
- Several
courses using law school textbooks and taught by a lawyer using
the Socratic Method.
- Individual
counseling for each Pre-Law Student.
- Internships
with a private practitioner, public defender, prosecutor, judge
or a selected legal agency.
- Observations
of trials at various courthouses.
- Observations
of actual law classes at accredited law schools.
- Lectures
by deans of public and private law schools.
- Legal
professionals explaining career options.
- Advice
concerning LSAT preparation.
- Access
to WESTLAW, a computer-assisted legal research program.
- A Pre-Law
advisor who has experience and training in law.
