Environmental Science Minor

Program Description

The environmental science minor at Flagler College connects students with the natural world, giving them a firm grounding in global environmental processes and ecological sustainability while focusing on the diverse Floridian ecosystems nearby. Environmental Science courses are infused with opportunities for students to work together to solve problems, research environmental issues in the laboratory and the field, engage in community issues and grow personally and professionally. 

Including an Environmental Science minor in a pre-professional major program of study enhances a student’s competitiveness for careers in the growing fields of environmental law, “green business”, global sustainability industries, education, environmental justice, environmental economics, environmental policy, and environmental risk assessment. Additionally, students who complete this minor often go on to pursue graduate degrees in environmental and ecological fields

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completing the requirements for this concentration in Environmental Science:

Natural World

Students will demonstrate foundational knowledge of scientific principles, theories, and laws and how they apply to the natural world. Students will be able to explain the physical environment of the natural world including the cycling of matter, energy, nutrients, and building blocks of life.

Diversity of Life

Students will demonstrate a scientific understanding of the relationship between the unity and diversity of life on planet Earth.

Environmental Issues

Students must demonstrate the ability to use logic and critical thinking to apply and integrate interdisciplinary scientific concepts to their understanding of environmental challenges and solutions.

Minor Requirements

Students minoring in environmental science must take a minimum of 16 credits. The three core courses required are NAS 104 or NAS 111, NAS 107, and NAS 401 or NAS 405. Additionally, a student must complete a minimum of six credits in natural science electives which may include NAS 105 or NAS 106, NAS 108, NAS 109, NAS 203, NAS 205, NAS 211, NAS 214, NAS 240, NAS 243, NAS 245, NAS 310, NAS 340, NAS 352, NAS 391, NAS 392, NAS 491, NAS 492, a second capstone: NAS 401 or NAS 405.
