Department of English

Flagler College's Department of English offers a comprehensive curriculum in literature, composition and creative writing which allows students to pursue a vast array of areas of interest.

Students majoring in English can take courses ranging from Chaucer to Modern Poetry, from Grammar Theory to Fiction into Film while students in the creative writing minor take courses in poetry, fiction and non-fiction, and have the opportunity to present their creative work to other practicing writers both at Flagler and in the community at large via a Portfolio Workshop.

Every student graduating as an English major will take courses that develop skills in critical thinking and critical analysis, written and oral communication, and research; as such, our students are able to continue their education in graduate school or embark on various career paths, including editing, journalism, professional writing, teaching, and others.

The English Program at Flagler College combines a strong, traditional English major with a writing curriculum designed to prepare students for a wide range of careers, including teaching, creative writing, and journalism. A judicious selection of courses will help a student to be well prepared for a career in communications, editing, or law.

Literary Journal

FLARE: The Flagler Review

FLARE: The Flagler Review is the literary journal of Flagler College. FLARE seeks to publish both up-and-coming and established writers. Accepting of both the traditional and experimental in the poetry, fiction, nonfiction, drama, and screenplay genres, the journal strives to showcase a variety of colorful, vibrant works from passionate writers. Production of the journal is offered as a three-credit course: ENG-240.

SIGMA TAU DELTA

"Sigma Tau Delta's central purpose is to confer distinction upon students of the English language and literature in undergraduate, graduate and professional studies. Sigma Tau Delta also recognizes the accomplishments of professional writers who have contributed to the fields of language and literature." - Sigma Tau Delta

The Writing Center

The Flagler College Writing Center is a service of the College and the English Department. The Center is available for all students, full-time and part-time, at all grade levels. The Writing Center primarily helps with the function of research papers and essays -- that is, Writing Center Assistants are trained to provide guidance in grammar, punctuation, and issues of logic and coherency. Assistants are also trained in the use of various styles of citation (APA, MLA, etc.).

The Reading Center

All members of the Flagler community are welcome to use the Reading Center in the Study Skills Center located in the Learning Resource Center. The Center provides a variety of materials and detailed information for immediate use by all students, staff and faculty. Students visiting the Reading Center can:

• Work one-on-one with an instructor to review for tests or increase comprehension strategies as they apply to college reading
• Increase awareness of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills to improve performance in subject areas
• Learn strategies for speed reading
• Work with reading skills on the computer
• Develop attitudes of confidence and satisfaction with reading progress
• Become aware of reading strengths and weaknesses through a variety of formal and informal assessments
• Improve study skills and critical thinking skills
• Learn time management skills for organization and goal achievement

Writers-In-Residence

The Writers-in-Residence program hosts a variety of guest authors each year. They give community readings, speak with Flagler English and creative writing classes and hold discussions and workshops for aspiring writers and novelists.

Many popular and renowned writers have visited the Flagler program over the years, including Tim O’Brien, W.D. Snodgrass, Robert Olen Butler, Connie May Fowler, Gerald Stern and Dennis Lehane.

Writers-in-Residence may present fiction, non-fiction or poetry, offering students an overview of several career paths they may want to pursue after graduation.

Internship Opportunities

ENG 483 - CAREER PREPARATION
Professor: Dr. Judith Burdan

The student intern works with an approved business or medium to apply writing skills in a working situation.  Cooperating businesses include local newspapers, radio stations, the St. Augustine Chamber of Commerce, and area magazines.
