Students interested in art have a choice of three majors, five minors and one special program:

Majors:

Minors:

Departmental Requirements:

  • The Art Department has the privilege of retaining one work from each graduating senior for its permanent collection.

  • No grade lower than a "C" in a studio course will be accepted toward completion of degree requirements.

Advisement: Not all courses can be offered every semester. Accordingly, students are advised to plan carefully their programs of study.

Prerequisites: No prerequisites are required unless so stated; exeptions to prerequisites may be made with departmental approval. All exceptions must be aproved in writing by the department chair.

Sophomore Review: All students choosing to apply to the Art Department, including freshmen and transfer students, will receive the designation of ART/P (Visual Art/Provisional) or ARG/P (Graphic Design/Provisional). this "provisional" status will change to an ART or ARG designation after the student has successfully completed the Sophomore Portfolio Review. Applicants who do not pass the Sophomore Portfolio Review will have their designation changed to UND, or "undecided," until they have chosen another major.

All students applying for acceptance to the Art Department must participate in the review during the second semester of their sophomore year. Students must submit a portfolio consisting of six examples of their work, an unofficial transcript prepared by the Office of the Registrar, and a written statement regarding their future career goals. Portfolios are evaluated based on the quality of the work submitted and the presentation. In addition, consideration is given to faculty recommendations and the student's grades. Students must understand that this is an evaluative process where the focus is to ensure the high performance standards of the program. Applicants who do not successfully complete the review process are admitted as majors to the Art Department.

The decisions made by the Faculty Committee in the Sophomore Review process are final and cannot be appealed.

Special Fees: Some studio art courses require a lab fee to cover the costs of supplies used by students enrolled in the course. A fee for color prints is also imposed on students enrolled in graphic design courses. Studio courses that require students to purchase specific art supplies will provide a list of those supplies on the course syllabus distributed at the beginning of the semester.

Transfer Stduents: All transfer students majoring in art or graphic design are required to take one drawing course (ART 105 or 106) and Design I (ART 223) at Flagler. All exemptions from this requirement must be approved in writing by the department chair.
