Academic honors: How do students qualify for them?
Students at Flagler College may graduate with honors by virtue
of earning exceptionally high grades. There are three designations
for honors: summa cum laude (with the highest praise), which requires
an overall grade point average of 3.90-4.00; magna cum laude (with
great praise), which requires an overall grade point average of
3.70-3.89; and cum laude (with praise), which requires an average
of 3.5-3.69.
To qualify for graduation with honors, a student must complete
at least 56 credit hours of academic work at Flagler College
that carry letter grades of A, B, C or D. Pass/fail options
are not applicable. All courses for which no quality points
are assigned are included in this pass/fail category, for example,
internships, field experiences, and practica. Only courses
taken at Flagler are computed in determining honors. The
grade point average will be rounded to the hundredth decimal
place.

GENERAL INFORMATION
ATTENDANCE AT COMMENCEMENT: All
graduates are required to participate in the Commencement
Ceremony, unless officially excused by Assistant
Dean of Academic Affairs Fred Dietz.
REHEARSAL: It is mandatory that
all prospective graduates attend rehearsal. The alphabetical line-up is critical
to the ceremony, as are specific seating assignments. Dean
Paula Miller will coordinate the rehearsal, and any questions
concerning the ceremony may be directed to her.
HONOR GRADUATES: Students graduating
with honors will wear an Honor Stole. If you
are graduating with honors, your Honor Stole will
be presented to you at rehearsal. According to the level of
academic achievement, the degree may be awarded summa cum laud
(3.9 – 4.0), magna cum laude (3.7 – 3.89), or cum
laude (3.5 – 3.69). The designation of honor graduate
is determined by the student’s cumulative grade point
average at the end of his or her senior year. Because grades
for the current term are not due until after the commencement
program is printed, the names of the honor graduates do not
appear in the program. Honor graduates will be recognized during
the ceremony, and the designation for honors will be announced
when the honor graduates are awarded their diplomas.
DRESS: Men are to wear a dress shirt
(preferable white) and tie, dark slacks, and dress shoes.
Women are to wear a dress, or skirt and blouse, and dress shoes.
GUEST SEATING: There are no
reserved seats in the Gymnasium or Auditorium except for graduates,
faculty, administration, and official College guests. The
Gymnasium and Auditorium will be opened at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday,
and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.
*Information
for guests with disabilities

to provide information to the Office of Academic Affairs about
any family members who may need special seating. Handicapped
seating is available for every commencement ceremony. An interpreter
will be available for hearing-impaired persons, and special seating
is provided for those requiring interpreter services.
Special seating arrangements are also available for those who require the
use of wheelchairs. Persons requiring special services or special seating
arrangements will be allowed to enter the Gymnasium between 8:00 and 8:30
a.m.
