Gallaudet University Regional Center

The Gallaudet University Regional Center (GURC) at Flagler College is one of six regional centers in the United States. The Center was established in January 1986. The regional centers support the mission of Gallaudet University and the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center by providing and promoting quality educational opportunities for deaf and hard of hearing children, youth and adults. The Gallaudet Regional Center staff includes Steve Larew, Director; Chachie Joseph, Ed.D., Outreach Specialist; Jodie Pineda, Administrative Assistant.

The GURC at Flagler is responsible for providing services to nine states in the southeast region: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. Services include planning conferences, providing workshops and other training, conducting needs assessments, and offering graduate and undergraduate extension classes.

Current extension classes are listed below and also may be found on the Gallaudet Web site.

The Regional Center also sponsors a regional Academic Bowl, an annual competition for schools with deaf and hard of hearing high school students. The first and second place teams travel to Gallaudet University to participate in the national competition.

The Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center (formerly known as Pre-College National Mission Programs) at Gallaudet is a federally mandated demonstration program for deaf and hard of hearing students on the campus of Gallaudet and serves students from preschool through high school. As part of its national mission to improve literacy in deaf and hard of hearing students, the Clerc Center collaborates with researchers and programs throughout the United States to offer training and technical assistance to professionals and parents, develop materials for the use in the education of deaf and hard of hearing children, and publicize successful research efforts.
