The Evolving Deaf Community: Dynamic, Diverse, Determined

April 19-21, 2001

Deaf Studies VII was held in Orlando, Fla. The theme was "The Evolving Deaf Community: Dynamic, Diverse, Determined!" Workshops offered during the conference discussed Deaf culture, linguistics, diversity, technology, literature and other topics. Approximately 300 people attended the conference.

Friday, April 20

8:30 — 10:00 Opening Session — Sam Supalla, Keynote presenter

Sam Supalla is an Associate Professor and Director of the Sign Language/Deaf Studies program at the University of Arizona. He has done extensive research on understanding and meeting the Linguistic needs of Deaf children. Dr. Supalla provided insight on how the Deaf community has responded to recent trends in medical and educational fields.

Lindsay Dunn is Special Assistant to the President, Diversity and Community Relations at Gallaudet University. Mr. Dunn has provided numerous presentations on diversity. He addressed concerns of ethnic groups in the Deaf community.
