Communities
in Schools of St. Johns County is a non-profit
organization that works to connect community resources
with our public schools. CIS also provides
services in the form of programs to meet the needs
of those students who are considered “at-risk” of dropping out of school or entering the justice
system. Intervention
is achieved through programs such as our Summer Institute/College-Reach
Out Program, AmeriCorps Florida Reads! Even Start
Family Literacy Program (Hastings, FL), Jacksonville
Jaguars Honor Rows, VSP Sight for Students, Hand
Up to High School Peer Mentoring Program and other
periodic events.
Common to all CIS-sponsored programs is a commitment
to “America’s Promise” that every child
deserves a one-on-one relationship with a caring adult,
a safe place to be during non-school hours, a healthy
start and future, a marketable skill through effective
education, and, finally, a chance to give back to their
community. Led by Gen. Colin Powell, this national
organization is dedicated to inspiring communities to
work toward providing all 5 Promises to each child by
name.
Mentoring, tutoring or other volunteer positions are
