Selena Hernandez-Haines: Faculty and Staff
Selena Hernandez-Haines, Commander, U.S. Navy (Retired) came to Flagler College after 28 years of public service. Her career has included 21 years as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy, more than five years as a federal civilian in the U.S. Coast Guard, extended support for a U.S. Army Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) project, and past service with the Florida Department of Children and Families, at the time known as the Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services.
Highlights of her federal career include assignments as Deputy Director for Human Capital/Resource Management at a U.S. Navy three-star command encompassing 13,000 personnel around the world; Commander of an Army-managed Military Entrance Processing Station in Tennessee; U.S. Officer in Charge of a joint Canadian-U.S. Navy antisubmarine warfare activity in Nova Scotia, Canada; and Chief, Process Improvement and Training at the Coast Guard’s only financial services organization, with more than 450 active-duty military and federal civilians on staff.
Between January 2014 and February 2016, Ms. Hernandez-Haines taught in the college’s Public Administration program. In June 2016 she became Flagler’s first Director of Military Recruitment.
She considers the common thread and most rewarding aspect of her career to be the opportunity to guide and support the professional development of subordinates and peers.
Ms. Hernandez-Haines holds a Master of Science in Management from the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California. She graduated magna cum laude from Flagler College with majors in psychology and English.
